John Carter and Bobby Bradford (along with Horace Tapscott) are the godfathers of the L.A. avant-jazz scene. This is one of their earliest recordings together. |

Vinny Golia is a critically important figure in the L.A. jazz scene. He was heavily influenced by John Carter and they recorded a number of times together. In turn, Golia has influenced countless musicians in the L.A. scene, many of whom studied with him at CalArts.
This is one of Golia's earliest recordings, with Roberto Miranda on bass and Alex Cline on bass. Recorded live in 1979. |

Recorded live in December 1989 at Catalina, one of Hollywood's few remaining jazz clubs. Tapscott plays here with John Carter on clarinet, Cecil McBee on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. 7 of the 9 songs are Tapscott compositions, with one each by fellow Angelenos Thurman Green and Michael Session. |

After making a number of major label albums on the East Coast during jazz's nadir, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe settled down in San Diego, where he's now lived for many years. This is one of my favorite recordings by him and features Gust William Tsilis on marimba and vibraphone, another under-recorded musician based on the West Coast. |

Leo Smith has recorded innumerable albums, but this is with his L.A. area band N'Da Kulture. |

The first of 3 volumes of Eric von Essen's compositions, recorded by a who's who of Los Angeles avant-jazz musicians. This series was a labor of love to bassist von Essen, who died tragically young. |
